The first time I recall seeing myself in print for anything fishing related was this right here. I had sent in a photo of an 11 inch Bluegill that I had caught to the NAFC Catch & Release Contest. I was quite surprised to open the magazine and see a cropped version of the photo with a small write up on page 14. This fish is still the largest I have caught for the species and can be seen on my Life List page. A big thank you to my buddy Jim for letting me fish his pond where this big ole' gil' was caught.

The same picture of that catch was used by this magazine a few months later. This one really had me confused as I hadn't sent them the picture. I came to find out that my buddy Rob from Riverfront Marina had given them a copy. It was pretty cool that I was sporting a T-Shirt from his marina & campgrounds when I made the catch. I guess he and I both got a little PR out of it! I should note that this magazine, at the time, had only a couple color pages in it. Proud to say, I was on one!

North American Fisherman Magazine
Not much of a surprise here, this photo I specifically sent in to the Member Photos section of the NAFC Magazine. This was a huge Bigmouth Buffalo that I caught in the Sandusky River in 2001. I still remember how hard the fish faught and how amazed I was at the size of it. This catch was very educational for me as it taught me to always be prepared to have a camera ready and a way to keep a big fish healthy before release. This fish swam away fine but it did get beat up a little on shore.

This one I would have to call another surprise. I had sent in the photo of the 29.5" Walleye to the NAFC Catch & Release Contest and I guess they decided to randomly use it in their Member Photos section. I know fisherman are not always considered the most honest people when it comes to the size of a fish, but you have to give me credit. I mean how many people wouldn't give their 29.5" Walleye another .5 of an inch to make it a 30 incher! Anyways, I was happy to see the catch in print!

Mepps Fishing Guide 2008
Now this was just downright cool! My first cover! When I recieved word about being on the cover of the Mepps Fishing Guide for 2008, it was almost like getting to catch that nice Steelhead all over again! Actually, it may have even been more exciting then catching the fish itself! I had sent in the photo of the 27" Steelhead as part of the Mepps Master Angler Program, as the fish was caught on a Mepps Aglia. According to the notification letter I got from T. Layton Shepherd (better known as Shep), their experts review thousands of photos before selecting the ones that are used. I've always loved using Mepps lures for a variety of species and this was truly an honor. As if having my picture on the cover wasn't enough, I also received a variety of Mepps lures, a hat, and a very nice personal letter.

To the left, is how the Port Clinton News Herald displayed the story of my most unusual surprise catch, a Pacu from the Sandusky River. I chose to display the News Herald's article due to it making the front page and was in color. Many other newspapers ran the story, and I have listed above, a few other confirmed publications and dates. I have to admit, I did not expect to get such an overwhelming response to the catch. While the catch was a very big deal to me, I just was surprised how many people took interest. Along with the newspapers, the story made quite a few websites with the most far reaching being ESPNoutdoors.com. Read below to get all the details.
